| 23rd January 2000 saw the first running of what will hopefully become a regular event in a similar way to the Aces Winternational. The carpet track was extended by about 6 metres and a very fast track was built, much more open than the usual club track. All the comments I heard were very positive. We shall do that more often. We ran two classes, the usual Tamiya class with silver can motors and a Scale saloon class more as per the BRCA national regs, but with foam tyres allowed. With very quick motors able to extend themselves the speeds were faster than had been seen here before. The turn out was quite pleasing, 34 in the Tamiya class and 23 in the Scale saloons, including some from around the region. I was very pleased to see them as we had not really advertised the event. We shall be sure to do so in the future. To make the event somewhat different, we decided to hold 4 rounds of qualifying as normal, but follow it with 3 legged finals for EVERYONE. It meant the meeting had to be held "in auto" but most racers managed. The meeting stats can be seen in the results pages but in Tamiya's final round, Martin Bell, driving superbly in heat 4, took provisional TQ only for Colin Blades and Dimitris Katsanis to beat his time in the final heat. In Scale saloons Adam Darcy held TQ from round 1 even though Peter Craig was on course to beat it in rounds 2 and 3. Round 4 was a very scrappy heat and no-one was near TQ. In the finals, Peter Watt made up for a relatively poor qualifying by taking the first 2 legs or the Tamiya A-final from 5th on the grid. Everything seemed to go wrong for pole man Colin Blades who finished 7th. In the Scale saloon A-final again pole man Adam Darcy had problems and did not even make the 3rd leg, the same as regular visitor David Snee who was become even more disenchanted with on-road racing. He should have been a force to be reckoned with but had all sorts of mechanical problems with steering servos and the like. Peter Craig took full advantage of the situation and won all 3 legs quite easily with Phil "Protrak" Haines coming second overall and Ian Craig third. |
